Intro

Rather than using a dashboard to organize and present your cards, you can organize cards on a Standard Page into distinct categories called Collections. This gives you greater control over the layout of your data and allows you to provide more effective and visually pleasing data stories for your viewers. Collections are given default names and descriptions, but you can change these to suit your business needs. You can reorder collections within your Standard Page or remove cards from a collection. You can also minimize collections so that only the names show, or delete them. When you remove cards from a collection or delete the collection, the cards return to the other “unorganized” cards on the Standard Page.
Note: Standard Pages included in Business in a Box are no longer available, as Business in a Box is no longer supported.
The layout of cards in a collection is preserved per user. For example, if a user collapses the “Sales” collection, leaves the page, and returns, the “Sales” collection is still collapsed. Another user coming to the page for the first time, however, sees all collections expanded. If he or she then makes changes, those changes are preserved just for that user. You can resize cards in a collection just as you can any other card. For more information about resizing cards, see Changing the Size of Cards in a Page.
Note: If you have a Participant system role, you can only view, minimize, and reorder cards within collections. You cannot add or remove collections, remove cards from a collection, move cards to a different collection, or change the name or description of a collection. For more information about security roles, see the System Role reference doc.
The following example shows a page in which cards with sales data have been organized into two collections—“Sales by Region” and “Sales by Category.” A user viewing this dashboard can more easily find the data they need by viewing the appropriate collection.

Create and Manage a Collection

Follow these steps to create a card collection:
  1. Navigate to the dashboard or System Page (Overview, Favorites, or Shared) where you want to create the card collection.
  2. Click Add (plus icon) > New Collection.
  3. (Optional) Change the Title text.
  4. Click and drag a card from the dashboard or System Page to add it to the collection. A blue rectangle appears as you drag a card, indicating where to drop the card.
  5. Repeat for as many cards as you want to add to the collection. You can click and drag cards within the collection to reorder them.
  6. Use the expand/minimize control to display or close your collection. When the collection is minimized, only the title is visible.

Remove a Card From a Collection

Click and drag a card out of the collection to remove it and return it to the unorganized cards region of the dashboard.

Reorder Multiple Collections

Follow these steps to reorder multiple collections on a dashboard or System Page.
  1. Hover over the empty gray area to the right of the collection name and description. A appears to indicate that you can click and drag the collection.
  2. Click and drag the collection to where you want it to be on the dashboard or Standard Page. All other collections are temporarily minimized so you can more easily relocate your collection. In this example, the user is moving the “Bar Graphs” collection between “Miscellaneous Chart Types” and “Line Graphs.”

Delete a Collection

  1. Hover over the collection you want to delete.
  2. Select Delete (X icon).
All of the cards in the collection return to the unorganized cards region of the dashboard/System Page.

Best Practices for Using Collections

If using collections on your dashboard or System Page, we recommend the following:
  • Each collection is specifically titled and applies to a particular business question
  • The description field contains details of why the collection exists
  • Each collection contains a “Hero Card”—a larger card that answers the high-level business question
