Big Data Buzzwords

When it comes to tech buzzwords, big data is taking center stage. The past few years have had their fair share of big data focused articles, which has us all asking, how much longer will we use that term?

One thing we do know is there are other keywords spinning off of big data. Whether they will replace it or simply give writers more variety when talking about data and analytics has yet to play out.

Here are the keywords you should know surrounding big data:

1. Smart Data

Many people are hoping we replace big data altogether and move on to smart data. Where big data is the technology solution and foundation for data driven decision-making, smart data deals with the analytics and visualization. Smart data wants to dress up big data and make it pretty and useful.

2. Data Viz

Speaking of pretty and useful, data visualization is the art that puts numbers into easy-to-read graphics. Data viz artists take all of the data accumulated through big data and turn it into graphs and charts that you want to look at. Visualizing data saves time and headaches for executives and employees.

3. Internet of Things

The Internet of Things will essentially make the physical world one big information system. Objects connect to surrounding objects and database data. Everyone and everything can represent themselves digitally and connect with other people and objects via big data.

4. Dark Data

Gartner defines dark data as the information assets organizations collect, process and store during regular business activities, but generally fail to use for other purposes (for example, analytics, business relationships and direct monetizing). It’s the dusty corners of your closet, neglected and always accumulating.

By itself it may not have much value. However, by combining it with big data you can unlock new patterns in customer behavior or find variations that may not have stood out previously.

5. Predictive Analytics

Predictive analytics use historical data to predict future events. The idea is, if you can predict the future, you can change the future. This gives you insight and control into the future of your company.
