Most CEOs Don’t Bother With Social Media

If you want to connect with a CEO at a Fortune 500 company, don't try to find them on Twitter, Facebook or even LinkedIn. According to a new study, 70 percent of them have absolutely no presence on social media, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal reports.

The research was done by a pair of businesses founded by former Omniture CEO Josh James, CEO.com and Domo, both aimed at helping executives manage better.

And James said CEOs who aren't on social media are missing the boat.

"This lack of engagement would be similar to 50 percent of the world using email with big CEOs holding out; or 50 percent of your customers shopping online but no CEOs trying it," he wrote in a blog post on Forbes Wednesday night.

The lack of CEOs on LinkedIn may be the most surprising. Only 26 percent use the professional social network. Of that group, 36 have one connection or none and only 10 have at least 500 connections.

Other findings of the study on Fortune 500 CEOs and social media can be found from our sister paper the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.
